Alstom is set to supply SYTRAL Mobilités with 26 new-generation automatic metros worth 145 million EUR.

In addition, the company will also upgrade systems and automation on line D of Lyon’s metro for 158 million EUR as part of a complete overhaul of the network.

Both the rolling stock and automatic control system will be developed and designed in France with a project team in the Lyon metropolitan area.

Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France, said:

Alstom is delighted with this new order from SYTRAL Mobilités. These modern, comfortable metros represent a considerable asset for improving the network and the passenger experience. The renovation of the automated driving system on line D, incorporating innovative control and cybersecurity technologies, meets the growing demand for more sustainable and smarter mobility.

The new MPL25 2-car metro trains will be fully automated, capable of carrying more than 300 passengers and fully compatible with MPL16 trains deployed on line B, enabling interoperability and multiple-unit operation (up to 4 cars).

Each of the new eco-designed trains will be fitted with large windows, a refrigerated ventilation system, LED lighting, passenger information screens, large entrance areas for people with reduced mobility, wide corridors and open circulation between cars. They feature a 100% electric braking system that is designed to recover energy and feed it back into the network itself.

Line D will receive a full renovation of its automatic control system, with a full fitting of Alstom’s Urbalis signalling solution.

The renovation will see a collaboration of workers from seven different Alstom sites in France, including Valenciennes (assembly, testing and validation), Ornans (engines), Le Creusot (bogies), Tarbes (traction) Villeurbanne (on-board electronics, passenger information, signalling equipment, cybersecurity, operational maintenance of automated systems), Crespin (modernisation of existing MPL85 trains) and Saint-Ouen (development of the Urbalis signalling system).
