Alstom has been selected by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to deliver 130 Citadis low-floor electric light rail vehicles (LRVs).
This contract is valued at over 667 million EUR (718.2 million USD) and includes options for Alstom to supply an additional 30 streetcars in the future.
Alstom’s Citadis LRV offer a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to a standard light rail vehicle thanks to its advanced traction technology.
It also achieves greater energy efficiency due to integrated LED lighting and sensor-based air-conditioning.
“We are proud to be selected by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority to build and supply 130 next-generation LRVs. The new Citadis streetcars will bring more efficient accessible and equitable service to the people of Philadelphia’s metropolis, as they will replace the existing SEPTA fleet that dates from the 80’s. We are thrilled with the opportunity to serve over 80,000 daily riders with a more accessible, comfortable, and modern experience.”
The new cars will feature 100% low floors and wider aisles to enable efficient passenger movements and accessibility.
In addition, metro-style seating with flexible configurations will accommodate wheelchairs, strollers and larger items, alongside varied capacity and demand.
Ultimately, the new streetcars are expected to help SEPTA provide a faster, more equitable and more reliable service that carries more passengers, uses less energy and reaches more destinations.
The vehicles will be manufactured at Alstom’s Hornell facility in upstate New York, while the advanced propulsion system will be produced at its North American centre of excellence in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania.
