TriMet has celebrated the delivery of the final Type 6 MAX unit at its Ruby Junction Rail Operations Facility, marking a new milestone in its largest MAX fleet upgrade in over 20 years.
The vehicle will now undergo several weeks of testing, including logging 3,000 miles out of service.
Delivered on Thursday 20 November; the vehicle completes TriMet’s new fleet, bringing its total to 30 new MAX trains, with 22 currently in service – accounting for approximately 15% of the total MAX fleet.
The first Type 6 train began service on 16 January 2025, with the new fleet having been designed for enhanced reliability, comfort and safety whilst reducing maintenance costs.

Each Type 6 train features onboard diagnostic technology, as well as energy-efficient LED lighting, graphical digital information displays and security cameras – as well as proprietary heated ice cutting technology attached to the trains’ pantographs.
Activated whilst in motion, the heated cutters remove ice or prevent it from forming, reducing potential disruption during winter storms.
With all units now on-site, TriMet has stated it expects the new trains to remain in operation for roughly 30 years – if not longer.
TriMet will continue to operate Type 1s until all Type 6s have entered service.
