Metro Transit has announced an upgrade programme to replace 55 of its current Saint Louis MetroLink units with a set of new, state-of-the-art Siemens light rail vehicles (LRVs).

Delivery of the LRVs, which are now in the design phase at Siemens’ facility in Sacramento, California, is planned to be completed in 2027.

The new units will feature a number of advanced operating systems and modern amenities, with their commissioning made possible by a 196.2 million USD grant awarded by the Federal Transit Administration in 2023 for the replacement of aging MetroLink LRVs.

Some of the vehicles currently in use on the MetroLink system have been in operation since the 1990s, including a number of LRVs that first entered service upon its launch in 1993.
