The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit has announced the completion of a series of refurbishment projects across the city’s subway system.

Works include the installation of new LED light fixtures across all 472 subway stations, repainting and replacement of tiles, removal of 1,460 tonnes of bagged garbage and nearly 700 tonnes of debris between stations.

New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow, said:

NYC Transit is committed to providing safe and reliable service and that effort starts right when customers enter the system with brighter and cleaner stations.

With historically high on-time performance, new ridership milestones and a continued emphasis on reviving stations, 2025 was a great year to be a subway rider.

As part of the overall renovation project; LED lighting began being installed across the New York City subway system from the start of January 2024 as part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s five-point safety plan for subway riders.

In the ensuing period; more than 181,000 fixtures have either been replaced or converted to LED lights – rendering the initiative complete well ahead of its original end date of mid-2026.

The new fixtures are anticipated to save the Authority around 5.9 million USD each year, and offer brighter than fluorescent lighting for nearly 4 million daily subway riders, as well as provide enhanced imaging capability for over 15,000 security cameras across the subway system.

Works have also been carried out to upgrade fluorescent lights in other parts of the subway system, including aboard trains and AC-powered tunnels – with 73% of subway trains now having been equipped with LED lighting.
