The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has officially announced a 25% year-over-year increase in rail safety fines across 2025.

The FRA has stated that it will begin deploying more safety inspectors, enhance regulations and aim to embrace innovation.

All measures are expected to ensure that rail travel is safer for American families, as well as support the implementation of reliable supply lines for American businesses.

FRA Administrator David Fink said:

FRA safety inspectors are on the front line in the fight to keep our nation’s railroads safe and this report is proof positive that they are succeeding.

The FRA’s FY 2025 Annual Enforcement Report found that the Agency conducted over 70,000 inspections to assess compliance with both safety regulations and laws.

Across the year, the FRA issued over 21 million USD in civil penalties and closed approximately 3,900 cases, with roughly 18 million USD coming from violations of rail safety laws and around 3.2 million from violations related to the transportation of hazardous materials.
