Sound Transit has begun introducing a new fleet of passenger rail cars into service on its Sounder commuter rail network following a joint procurement programme with two California transit agencies.
The 11-car order, approved by the Sound Transit Board in 2020, comprises three cab cars and eight coach cars built by Alstom under a contract worth 46.5 million USD. The vehicles are being introduced ahead of increased passenger demand associated with summer events in the Seattle area, including FIFA World Cup matches and other major gatherings.

The first of the new cars entered service on the Sounder S Line on 1 June. Additional vehicles will be phased into operation as they become available.
The fleet was acquired through a shared purchase with California’s San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission and North County Transit District. The agencies combined their orders to increase purchasing volume and reduce the cost per vehicle.

The new rail cars incorporate Crash Energy Management (CEM) technology, which is designed to absorb energy during a collision. Safety features also include energy-absorbing zones at both ends of each vehicle and couplers designed to reduce the transfer of impact forces between cars. Furthermore, the cab cars are fitted with full-width windscreens intended to improve operator sightlines.
Passenger-focused features include power and USB outlets at every seat, revised seating arrangements, additional leg room in selected areas, and redesigned bicycle storage facilities.
Sound Transit Chief Executive Dow Constantine said:Safety and the passenger experience are part of Sound Transit’s DNA. These new cars embody both values, and we are pleased to bring them into service. From creature comforts to improved visibility and performance, the new cars represent a real upgrade for our Sounder riders.
Before entering service, the new rail cars completed inspections, systems testing and commissioning procedures.
The contract for the vehicles was originally awarded to Bombardier Transportation before the company was acquired by Alstom in 2021, at which point responsibility for the order transferred to the French rail manufacturer.
