Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Etihad Rail, supervised a board meeting during which he approved a tender worth 4.6 billion AED for civil works and the construction of Package D of Stage 2 of Etihad Rail. Package D will connect the ports of Fujairah and Khorfakkan to the rest of the national rail network at the Dubai border with Sharjah. It covers a distance of 145km. Package D will link up key ports to manufacturing, production and population centres, thereby improving the transport and infrastructure industries in the country.

Sheikh Mohammed said:

“The awarding of this contract is a highly significant achievement as Etihad Rail follows its path to progressing one of the most important and economically strategic projects in the UAE. While expanding a vital sector that constitutes the lifeline of our national economy, we continue to provide a safe, modern, and sustainable national railway network that meets the aspirations and expectations of our nation and its leaders, supporting the UAE’s position as a major link in the regional and global supply chain, and as a key player in the logistics system.”

The 145kms of Package D include 15 tunnels through the Hajar Mountains. Their total length will be 16km. The works will also see the construction of 35 bridges and 32 underpasses.

By connecting the two ports to the national network, it will become possible to transport up to two million TEUs annually. Etihad Rail trains will also shift up to 30 million tons of construction materials per year, which will go to distribution centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This will cut the overall cost of transport as well as the number of lorry trips by more than 2,000 per day.

Packages A, B and C have already been awarded. Etihad Rail has a mandate to create a 1,200km rail network which will be part of the proposed Gulf Railway.
