TrainOptimizer® – next development steps

User-Centred Design | TrainOptimizer® is the leading software for quickly checking the efficiency of train layouts.

Passenger changeover times, stowability of luggage and actual usability of seats are the most important outputs that can be determined with just a few clicks.

TrainOptimizer® has already been used in numerous renowned vehicle projects to optimise them in terms of efficient operation, for example to reduce dwell time and thus significantly improve operational quality while simultaneously reducing energy consumption on the open track.

In the TrainOptimizer 2.0 research project, funded by the Austrian National Foundation for Research, Technology and Development, specific further development steps were worked out. In particular, the aim was to gather and understand the requirements of potential users in depth and to work out targeted further development steps based on this. In February 2024, the results of the research project were presented to interested experts at a final workshop at Vienna University of Technology. People from six vehicle manufacturers, four railway operators, five design agencies and four research institutions were represented.

The most important request was developed immediately after the project was completed and is now available to all users of the TrainOptimizer® software at no extra cost. Not only can individual carriage layouts be simulated and evaluated with immediate effect, but a separate train generator allows different trains to be put together from any number of carriages and their variants, thus enabling complete trains to be simulated and optimised in terms of passenger changeover times, among other things.
