The Ceneri Base Tunnel has formally opened, completing the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA). Regular services will begin in December.
The partial upgrade of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel has entered the next phase, with public consultations on the plans beginning on 17 August.
BLS will begin its refurbishment of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel in September following water and sand ingress earlier this year.
The Swiss Federal Office of Transport has confirmed that it will be able to issue the operating licence for the Ceneri Base Tunnel on time.
The New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), which consists of two north-south axes through Switzerland, will open fully in December.
The Ceneri Base Tunnel opening ceremony is to go ahead as planned in September though on a smaller scale due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The first test at 275km/h has taken place in the Ceneri Base Tunnel with the ICE-S from Germany. The tunnel will go to SBB on 1 September.
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel suffered water and sand ingress in March. BLS has cleaned up the damage and the tunnel will reopen on 24 April.
