Sydney Metro Tunnelling to Western Sydney Airport Begins

Two tunnel boring machines – Eileen and Peggy – have started their journeys at the future Airport Business Park Station.

They are boring the first 5.5km sections of the twin tunnels towards the Aerotropolis. Together, the TBMs will excavate around 120m of tunnel per week, which is the first step in delivering the six new metro stations on the line from St Marys to the centre of the Aerotropolis.

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line will open to the public when Western Sydney International Airport opens. The expected journey time from St Marys to the Airport Terminal Station is 15 minutes and an additional 5 minutes to the Aerotropolis Station.

TBM Eileen is named after the first female mayor of Penrith, Eileen Cammack OBE who also set up a pathology lab at Nepean District Hospital.

TBM Peggy has been named in honour of pioneer aviator Peggy Kelman OBE, a flying companion of Nancy-Bird Walton and key in promoting aviation for women.
