Transport for NSW has commenced passenger service on the new Sydney Metro City extension, connecting northwest Sydney, the CBD and Sydenham.
This service provides an extra 15.5 kilometres of metro line, alongside six brand-new underground stations and new metro platforms at Central Station and Sydenham Station.
This new section of railway is part of the M1 Northwest & Bankstown Line, which now extends 51.5 kilometres through Sydney with stops at 21 stations between Tallawong and Sydenham.
The line will later be completed with an additional 13 kilometres, which will open after 10 existing stations have been converted on the T3 Bankstown Line.
The newly expanded metro network greatly enhances connectivity to Sydney’s employment, financial and retail districts. It has capacity to move more people across Sydney Harbour during peak times than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel combined.
Service is now following the weekday timetable, with a train arriving every four minutes during peak times and every seven minutes throughout the day. After a few weeks, the 7-minute interpeak service will move to a 5-minute interpeak service on weekdays.
By providing 445 new metro services each day, around 34,000 people can be transported every hour.
The new service is also now the fastest way to get from Sydney’s north into the Sydney CBD. The journey from Chatswood to Martin Place takes 11 minutes, while a ride along the full alignment, from Sydenham to Tallawong, takes under 60 minutes.
