Founded in 2015, Rail BI began as a data consulting project that evolved into a powerful software application tailored for Network Rail. By consolidating disparate data sets from multiple sources into a single, coherent platform, Rail BI enables advanced cost and benefit estimations, detailed business case production, and strategic planning for large-scale railway projects.
Rail BI’s journey from prototype to production has been marked by significant achievements. Trusted by Network Rail, our platform has been instrumental in delivering business cases for major railway projects, including the Castlefield Corridor, East Coast Main Line, Transpennine Route Upgrade, East West Rail, and Northern Powerhouse Rail, among others. Notably, our largest project, the East Coast Mainline ETCS Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC), resulted in an estimated cost of £1.2 billion—a scale of work deemed unmanageable with traditional consulting methods and spreadsheets. This project exemplifies the unique capability of Rail BI to handle complex data-driven challenges that standard tools cannot.
Today, Rail BI is a trusted partner for all UK regions, helping maintain the workbank for the Long Term Deployment Plan for Signalling and Level Crossings. Our platform is continually evolving, with upcoming product launches including the Rail BI Datastore—an advanced solution for managing railway asset data—and the Inspection Tool, designed for on-track inspections of asset conditions. These innovations will further extend our platform’s capabilities, offering more comprehensive data management solutions tailored to the needs of railway professionals.
