Siemens Mobility has presented its Vectron X locomotive platform at InnoTrans 2026, bringing the Siemens Xcelerator digital platform to rolling stock for the first time.
Presented to the media during the InnoTrans press day, Vectron X combines established locomotive technology with software, data and artificial intelligence. Siemens describes the platform as a step towards software-defined rolling stock, with digital functions able to evolve throughout the locomotive’s lifecycle.
The company’s wider InnoTrans presence focuses on the combination of hardware, software and AI, with Siemens demonstrating how data can be used to increase network capacity, improve asset availability and support railway operations.
Siemens Mobility launched its Siemens Xcelerator approach in rail four years ago. The portfolio has since included Signaling X, Mobility Software Suite X and Railigent X. Vectron X extends this approach to the vehicle itself.
The locomotive has been designed as an open and connected platform, with an onboard App Store, open APIs and a Smart Screen bringing operational data, route information and applications together.
The approach is intended to allow customer, operator and third-party applications to interact with the locomotive rather than treating the vehicle’s software as a fixed system.
The company likened the concept to a smartphone, but on a considerably different scale, describing Vectron X as a “9,000 horsepower smartphone.”
A key demonstration at the Siemens booth connects a Vectron X driver’s cab with Signaling X, Mobility Software Suite X and Railigent X. The demonstration shows how information can move between the vehicle, railway infrastructure and cloud-based systems using standardised data and open interfaces.

Rather than viewing a locomotive as a fixed piece of hardware with a defined set of functions, Siemens is positioning Vectron X as a platform that can receive new software and digital services throughout its operational life.
At InnoTrans, the company is using the locomotive to demonstrate how this combination of established rail engineering and continuously evolving software could change the way rolling stock is operated and maintained.
