Stadler has ordered 50 mtu Series 4000 engines from Rolls-Royce for its new high-speed trains in Saudi Arabia.
The trains will enter service on the Dammam–Riyadh route, where they will run at speeds of up to 200 km/h.
The order covers ten trains, each powered by four mtu 12V 4000 R64 engines, with additional units supplied as spares and for reserve power cars to maintain service availability during maintenance. The contract also includes an option for a further 40 engines to support additional trains in the future.

Before entering passenger service, four trains will undergo testing and approval processes in both Europe and Saudi Arabia.
Rolls-Royce has experience supplying mtu engines for Saudi Arabia Railways, with more than 70 similar engines in use since 2012. The Series 4000 engines are designed to operate in demanding conditions, including high ambient temperatures and exposure to desert dust.
The mtu drive systems meet EU Stage V emission standards. According to Stadler, the technology is intended to support efficient operation, environmental compliance, and passenger safety on the new fleet.
Tobias Arnold, commercial project lead at Stadler said:For us, mtu propulsion technology from Rolls-Royce is a central component in this project. It not only enables high speeds, but also meets the highest standards of environmental compatibility, energy efficiency and operational safety.
