Škoda Group has entered a new strategic partnership with Microvast to develop and manufacture next-generation battery systems for public transport vehicles – predominately battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs).
The partnership aims to combine Microvast’s expertise with the design and manufacture of battery cells with Skoda’s experience in both the design and certification of vehicles for rail and trolleybuses.

Jaromír Šilhánek, President of Business Units at Škoda Group, said:At Škoda Group, we are committed to developing our own battery technology as the cornerstone of our future solutions for zero-emission mobility.
The partnership with Microvast combines our in-depth knowledge of transport systems with their cutting-edge battery innovations. This will enable us to manufacture highly competitive products made in Europe.
This collaboration not only strengthens our own vehicle portfolio, but also paves the way for offering advanced battery systems to other manufacturers in the industry.
During the first phase of the collaboration; both companies will focus on the development of batteries for use on railways, specifically the Škoda Group’s new battery units. The battery systems will also be used in other types of public transport vehicles, including electric buses.
Yang Wu, Chief Executive Officer of Microvast, said:Our partnership with Škoda Group represents a significant step towards rail transport that is sustainable thanks to advanced battery technology.
It underlines the commitment of both partners to deliver a safe, reliable and long- lasting battery solution that will enable our customers to decarbonise their fleets and shape the mobility of tomorrow.
The two parties intend to present the first new vehicle to feature the new battery system prototype by the end of 2026.
