Siemens Mobility has been contracted to supply and install its digital Trainguard MT CBTC solution on lines U2 and U4 of the Hamburg subway, operated by Hamburger Hochbahn.
The CBTC technology will allow trains to run at shorter intervals of only 100 seconds. This will enable more trains to operate in order to increase the network’s capacity.
In addition, CBTC also improves punctuality, reliability and energy efficiency by up to 20 percent.

Communication-based train control (CBTC) is a system of digital signals exchanged between the track and the subway vehicles.
This allows rail vehicles to operate at braking distance intervals rather than with predefined block section lengths.
Once shorter headways are implemented, the network’s capacity can increase by more than 20 percent without expensive and timely construction projects.
