Alstom has announced the successful delivery of the first of 16 serial Traxx Passenger electric locomotives produced for the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF).

The delivery was enabled by a contract first signed by Alstom and ARF in January 2024, and seeks to mark a milestone in a journey towards cleaner, faster and more efficient passenger services within the country.

Having successfully completed full testing for the market authorisation process; the locomotive has been confirmed as ready for operation. It is capable of travelling of speeds of up to 200 km/h, and is set to begin the endurance testing phase in the coming weeks, in parallel with driver training.

Deliveries of the locomotive are set to continue throughout 2026, with the four-axle electric locomotives coming equipped with a fully suspended drive system and Alstom’s state-of-the-art onboard ERTMS system, which aims to provide both optimal efficiency and high levels of safety and security.

Serban Iorga, Alstom Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, said:

ARF’s long-term ambition has been to modernise Romania’s passenger rail services and expand sustainable, high‑performance mobility, and this first delivered locomotive marks an important step in making that vision a reality.

We are proud to support these national goals by providing reliable, energy‑efficient rolling stock that will enable cleaner, faster and more dependable rail travel for passengers across the country.

The contract for the sixteen locomotives also includes the supply of 20-years of maintenance and repair services, which can be extended by a further 20 years.
