Alstom has been awarded a 915 million EUR turnkey contract for the delivery of Belgrade’s Metro Line 1, connecting Makiško Polje to Karaburma and forming the first phase of the project.
Set to be the first fully automated metro system in Serbia; the project is expected to alleviate surface congestion, cutting directly through the city across a span of 15km and 15 stations, including 11km of tunnels.
Alstom will deliver a full turnkey metro solution for the project, which is being carried out for public utility company Belgrade Metro & Train. The company will provide 32 Metropolis driverless three-car trains, signalling and telecommunications, power supply, trackwork, platform screen doors, depot equipment, a centralised control centre, and comprehensive cybersecurity systems.
The metro will be fully equipped with Alstom’s proprietary Urbalis CBTC technology, which will allow for fully automated, high-capacity operations.
All new Metropolis trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s Valenciennes site in France, with the company having stated it has now officially entered the design phase for the Metro Line 1.

The project is set to benefit from support provided by the French government, underlining the bilateral cooperation between both France and Serbia.
