New York: AECOM, Skanska and SOM Complete LIRR’s Pennsylvania Station Concourse Renovation

AECOM, Skanska and SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) have completed the 395 million USD renovation of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) concourse at Pennsylvania Station in New York.

The project, which was awarded by Penn District Station Developer LLC in 2020, was focused on modernising and widening LIRR’s 33rd Street train hall corridor without interfering with the station’s daily operations and train service.

Skanska served as Design Builder, while AECOM served as Designer of Record. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill was the Lead Architect.

Thomas Prendergast, AECOM's New York Metro Executive, said:

“The most heavily used concourse of America’s busiest train station has been entirely transformed, both visually and functionally. The improvements make commuting more convenient, while also allowing this transit hub to have the capacity and accessibility to meet New York’s growing transportation needs.”

The design-build project lasted 27 months and involved both the design and construction of the new concourse, with a widened corridor, raised ceiling heights, improved lighting, better wayfinding, new passenger information screens, improved mechanical and electrical systems and new architectural finishes. The works have also improved ADA access from the street to the concourse via a new elevator on 33rd Street and from the concourse to the platforms with rebuilt stairs and handrails, new enclosures for fire protection and a replacement lift.

Michael Viggiano, Executive Vice President of Skanska's East Coast Civil Operations, said:

“In order to best accommodate and enhance the commuting experience for the 600,000 passengers that utilize LIRR’s 33rd Street corridor daily, deciphering a path to improving the station’s circulation and traffic flow without disrupting daily train service was paramount.”

Construction began in January 2021, with substantial completion being reached in March 2023.
