Rail Link to Romania’s Busiest Airport Completed

DB Engineering & Consulting and its Romanian partners SC Arcada Company SA and design company SC ISPCF SA have together completed the rail connection to Terminal 1 of Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport.

These works mark the completion of phase 1 of the modernisation of the Bucharest North-Henri Coandă International Airport Bucharest railway line.

The airport is located to the north of Romania’s capital. It will now take just 20 minutes for the journey on the 16km line from Bucharest’s city centre. The existing railway network now links to the newly built airport station alongside Terminal 1 via a new 3km section of single track.

The project had a runtime of 18 months. The first four were spent on the design, the remaining 14 on execution. The project was delivered in full in December 2020.

The 3km railway line included the following features:

  • a 1.52km viaduct across the country’s busiest road
  • 3 culverts
  • 1 electronic interlocking
  • 1 station at Terminal 1

DB Engineering & Consulting provided design services for the project, including the preparation of the design and the detailed design, a certified quality check for the design, and technical assistance during the execution.
