Polish regional railway operator, Koleje Mazowieckie has contracted Stadler to deliver 14 additional FLIRT electric multiple units (EMU) trains.

This order, part of a framework agreement established in June 2024, reinforces the operator’s commitment to modernising its fleet and improving passenger experience across the Mazovia region of Poland.

The latest order brings the total number of FLIRT trains secured under this framework to 64.

This contract is the third of four executive agreements outlined in the initial framework. The first units from this batch are expected to be delivered within 24 months. Additionally, the contract includes an 18-year maintenance service agreement, ensuring operational efficiency and longevity for the new rolling stock.

Robert Stępień, CEO of Koleje Mazowieckie said:

Thanks to funds obtained from the European Funds for Mazovia 2021-2027 program, we are signing another executive contract. Including the contracts already signed, Koleje Mazowieckie will acquire 64 five-car FLIRT electric multiple units. Our goal for the coming years is to purchase as many as 75 of these vehicles. This is not only an investment in modern rolling stock but also in the future of the entire region. Modern trains significantly improve the travel experience of the passengers who use our services. As one of the most modern regional operators in Poland, we strive to maintain the highest standards.

The new FLIRT trains will feature lightweight aluminium construction, contributing to energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness, which are crucial factors for sustainable rail operations.

Czesław Sulima, board member and operations director of Koleje Mazowieckie said:

The new five-car FLIRT trainsets make use of modern technologies to reduce energy consumption and, consequently, lower operational costs. This is extremely important, as governments around the world strive to achieve net zero. We are very pleased to sign yet another agreement with Stadler Polska. To date, our cooperation has been very successful, and once again, I am convinced that the vehicles will be manufactured to the highest standards and delivered on schedule.

Koleje Mazowieckie currently operates 71 FLIRT trains, including 10 units acquired in 2006 and 61 from a 2018 agreement. The latest batch of 50 units, ordered in 2024, is in production. All trains are manufactured at Stadler Polska’s Siedlce plant, supporting the local economy and engaging regional suppliers.

Radosław Banach, CEO of Stadler Polska said:

I am very pleased with the agreement with Koleje Mazowieckie for another 14 vehicles. The Masovian operator has been a key client and partner for us since the beginning of our operations in Poland. Thanks to orders from KM, we increase employment at our Siedlce plant by another 200 people. This is also great news for our suppliers and partners, who will work with us to fulfill this order. We are delighted that our Siedlce plant, producing here in Mazovia, can make a significant contribution to improving rail travel in the region.

FLIRT is one of Stadler’s most successful train models, with over 2,750 units sold worldwide. The Koleje Mazowieckie fleet will feature:

  • Lightweight aluminium construction for improved energy efficiency
  • Low-floor entrances for easy accessibility
  • Modern passenger amenities, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and an advanced passenger information system
  • Safety features such as defibrillators, intercoms, and ETCS Level 2 compliance
  • Seating for 279 passengers, with total capacity for 600
  • A maximum speed of 160 km/h, meeting European safety and technical standards

The new trains will be deployed across Koleje Mazowieckie’s network, serving routes to Siedlce, Łowicz, Skierniewice, Radom, and Działdowo, further enhancing regional rail connectivity.
