The government of Ontario and CN Rail have reached an Agreement-in-Principle for the purchase of new land for the dedicated construction of GO tracks along the Kitchener Line.

The Agreement-in-Principle coincides with additional GO train services set to be added to the Kitchener Line in November, with 18 new weekend trips set to commence between Bramalea GO and Union Station, as well as the first-ever weekend service to Kitchener.

Part of the Kitchener Extension Project; the Agreement-in-Principle forms the latest step in the journey to build a faster two-way, all-day rapid service along the Line, with the new project set to add 40km of track and include re-alignments, signal upgrades, bridge work and platform expansion along the corridor.

Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, said:

Today, we’re taking two pivotal steps towards delivering two-way, all-day GO train service between Kitchener and Toronto.

Under Premier Ford’s leadership, our government is delivering the largest transit expansion in North America to tackle gridlock, keep workers on the job and support economic growth.

Once completed, the new Kitchener Line aims to provide two-way, all-day services to Bramalea GO seven days per week; 30-minute two-way, all-day services to Mount Pleasant GO seven days per week; additional trains during peak rush hour travel times to Union Station and Mount Pleasant GO in the evening; 60-minute two-way, all-day services to Kitchener GO seven days per week; and additional trains during peak rush hour travel times to Union Station and Kitchener GO in the evening.
