Nomad Digital, a leading provider of transport connectivity solutions, has been selected by Italo to equip its new German high-speed fleet with its advanced 5G Internet On Board (IOB) solution and Nomad Engage portal for extended passenger infotainment.
The contract covers all 26 Siemens Velaro high-speed trains ordered by Italo as part of its planned entry into the German market from 2028. As rail operators expand into new markets, passengers increasingly expect the same high-quality connectivity they experience at home and at work. The Nomad Digital solution has been designed to support a seamless digital experience. It will enable passengers to enjoy continuous connectivity so they can work, live and play on the go. Passengers will also have the opportunity to access a range of media, entertainment and journey information content through Nomad Engage.
The key to being able to deliver the seamless passenger experience is connectivity. Nomad Digital’s future ready design will utilise both cellular and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite technologies supported by the ‘intelligent hybrid aggregation’ tool which optimises performance for passengers and data costs for operators.
The contract was awarded following a competitive tender process and builds on the successful partnership between Nomad Digital and Italo in Italy. In 2024, Nomad Digital was selected to upgrade Italo’s existing fleet with onboard connectivity and has since completed the rollout across the operator’s network. The new agreement supports Italo’s expansion into one of Europe’s most competitive high-speed rail markets and further strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two companies.
