New Grand Paris Express Milestone with Breakthrough of TBM Mireille

A key milestone in the Grand Paris Express project has been achieved with the first breakthrough of tunnel boring machine (TBM) Mireille at the site of the future metro line 16’s Clichy-Montfermeil station in northern Paris.

The Grand Paris Express project will extend the capital city’s metro and light rail network by 200 kilometres with almost 70 stations improving connections across with wider Paris area.

Mireille travelled 2.2km, starting from the Bel-Air site in Chelles at the southern end of Lot 2 – the section of the line under development by Webuild and NGE.

The TBM will soon continue its journey for just over a further 3km to meet Houda – a TBM boring from the northern end of the lot at Mare au Chanvre.

As part of the Grand Paris Express project, Webuild and NGE are creating 11km of tunnels for Line 16. This is in addition to four stations between Aulnay-sous-Bois and Chelles.

This is not the first time the two companies have worked together – they’ve also completed work on Lot 4 of Line 14 South, which stretches 4.1km to Orly Airport.

Together, these projects can help to remove up to 385,000 cars a day from the streets of Paris, the equivalent of 81,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

This will help Paris take a step closer to achieving its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
