MTA Commission Track Geometry Vehicle
New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad have commissioned Ensco Inc. to design and manufacture a highly advanced track geometry vehicle for use on the Metro-North Railroad. It will inspect and analyse rail and track infrastructure using laser, optical and inertial sensor systems and send alerts to Metro-North.
The track geometry vehicle is a diesel car fitted with innovative and advanced gadgetry specifically designed by Ensco Inc, which will measure track geometry, gage, alignment, cross-level, surface, alignment, speed, twist and warp at 30cm intervals to ensure the tracks meet regulation standards.
Until now, Metro-North has used third-party contractors to carry out inspections on tracks during downtime using their own inspection vehicles and delivering data back to Metro-North. This new vehicle will enable Metro-North to carry out its own inspections. It will enter operation in early 2018, following calibration and testing.

Joseph Giulietti, President of Metro-North Railroad, said:
“This vehicle will further enhance our efforts to identify any potential track problems so they can be repaired before becoming safety issues and affecting service. The MTA’s Blue Ribbon Panel, the Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board all determined that the acquisition of a Track Geometry Vehicle would enable Metro-North to improve track inspections. This cutting-edge inspection vehicle will significantly contribute to Metro-North’s intense focus on ensuring customer safety.”
Glen Hayden, Vice President – Engineering for Metro-North Railroad, said:
“The Track Geometry Vehicle now gives Metro-North in-house inspection capability; the railroad can examine track and make necessary repairs with greater speed and efficiency, resulting in cost savings. It will allow Metro-North to inspect track to meet Federal requirements as well as to verify quality of track production efforts.”
Ensco Inc. is a specialist developer and manufacturer of safety, security and quality monitoring technologies for railways, delivering automated and autonomous systems, web-based data management systems and vehicle dynamics analysis all intended to improve safety, reliability and increase track and vehicle life-cycles.
