Italy: RFI Awards 2.7bn ERTMS Tender

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has awarded its tender for the design and construction of an ERTMS across 4,200 kilometres of high-speed and regional railway lines in Italy.

It aims to complete this project by 2026, keeping in line with its strategy to implement ERTMS technology across its entire network by 2036.

Launched last December, the tender is valued at 2.7 billion euros (2.89bn USD) and funded by the Italian government’s recovery and resilience plan (PNRR).

This is in addition to the works for the installation of ERTMS on 700km of lines in Sicily, Lazio and Abruzzo and Umbria, awarded last November, and valued at roughly 500m euros (535.24m USD).

This latest tender has been split into four lots. The Centre North lot, worth 1.3bn euros (1.39bn USD), covers just shy of 2,000km.

This was awarded to a joint venture led by Hitachi Rail and including ECM, Mer Mec, Infratech Consorzio Stabile SCARL and Atlante SCPA.

The Central South lot, valued at 900 million euros (963.5m USD) went to Alstom Farroviaria, and covers 1,400km of track.

The third, ‘centre’ lot was awarded to a collaboration of Mer Mec and Salcef for 323m euros (345.78 USD), while the 405km long South lot was awarded to a joint venture made up of Eredi Giuseppe Mercuri, Morelli Giorgio, ESIMI and Guastamacchia and led by ECM.

This final lot is valued at 251m euros (268.7m USD).
