These will support the expansion of the Genoa Metro, including the west and east extensions towards Canepari and Martinez, which are currently under construction.

In a deal valued at 70 million euros (80.1m USD), the new generation trains will be equipped with ATP and ATO systems and will be able to run coupled with the third-generation vehicles currently being used on the network.

Each train will have four carriages and an overall capacity of 290 passengers. When in service it’s planned that two trains will run together, providing a capacity of 580 passengers.

The 14 vehicles will be manufactured in Hitachi Rail’s Italian factories and deliveries will begin at the start of 2024.

Marco Beltrami, AMT Chairman, said:

“The improvement of the metropolitan network is fundamental for the public transport in Genoa. AMT believes in an integrated pattern metro/bus to guarantee the max mobility options available to Genoa citizens.

“The 14 new trains will allow us to offer a service of constantly increasing quality, within a growing network. The presence of Hitachi in Genoa allows us to have not only a global level supplier, but also a partner with whom we can launch important innovative projects.”
