Hitachi Rail has signed a new contract with the City of Naples for the construction of the new Line 6 depot and Campegna station.

Designed for rolling stock maintenance and stabling; the new rail depot will also include an operational and technological hub, and aims to ensure full functionality along the existing line, as well as its extension toward Bagnoli and Posillipo.

The construction of the depot is expected to increase train frequency to every 4.5 minutes and cover roughly 110,000 square metres near the FS Campi Flegrei station. The site will encompass several buildings, including a new metro line traffic control centre.

Also included as part of the agreement are a number of urban regeneration and reconnection works in the areas affected by construction.

In addition to the new depot; Hitachi Rail will also oversee construction of the new Campegna station, which will connect the Bagnoli district to Line 6 and, through it, to Line 1.

The contract has been valued at around 630 million EUR, and is set to be completed in just over seven years. Together with the fleet of 22 trains currently under production at Hitachi’s plants, the works represent the final phase of the Line 6 Concession.

Completion of the project is set to be carried out across two phases, with the first immediately implementable with existing funding of roughly 325 million EUR from the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation and EU Development and Cohesion funds expected to enable the connection to Mostra station and the worksop, with the second phase completing any remaining works.

Luca D’Aquila, COO Hitachi Rail Group and President Hitachi Rail Italy:, said:

The new Via Campegna hub is tangible proof of our commitment to building increasingly advanced, reliable, and sustainable mobility systems.

Together with the Municipality of Naples, we are driving a project that will boost the city, improve service quality, and contribute significantly to local development. It is a decisive step toward modern, efficient public transport ready to meet future challenges.
