Major construction is set to begin on the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project in Los Angeles, California, following a groundbreaking ceremony held on 19 October 2026.
The 6.7-mile (10.8-kilometre) line will run along Van Nuys Boulevard, serving 11 new stations and connecting the communities of Van Nuys, Panorama City and Arleta, as well as San Fernando Road in Pacoima.

The project is being developed by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) and is targeted for completion in 2032.
The new service will connect with the G Line in Van Nuys and provide interchange opportunities with local bus services and the Metrolink and Amtrak station in Van Nuys. It is also intended to connect with the planned Sepulveda Transit Corridor rail line and a proposed Metrolink station in Pacoima serving the Antelope Valley Line.
The light rail line is intended to improve public transport access to employment, education and local services along the corridor. Destinations include the Van Nuys Civic Center, Panorama Mall, Mission Community Hospital and Arleta High School.
LA Metro’s plans also include streetscape improvements, upgraded pavements, safer pedestrian crossings and changes to the road layout.
Van Nuys Boulevard is currently served by Metro bus routes 233 and 761. The two routes recorded almost 20,000 passenger boardings combined in September 2026, according to Metro. Approximately 19% of households within the project corridor do not have access to a car, compared with 8% across Los Angeles County.
The light rail line will be the first rail service on Van Nuys Boulevard since Pacific Electric streetcars stopped operating along the street in 1952.
