Hitachi Rail has opened its Newton Aycliffe factory to the public for the very first time.
The sell-out event, which took place on Saturday 4 October, saw the rail manufacturer welcome attendees for a celebration of its storied history in unison with Railway 200.
Visitors to the site were offered a seldom experienced behind-the-scenes at Hitachi Rail’s production facility, which is located alongside the Stockton and Darlington railway.
Inside, insights were given on innovations in battery and digital train technology, the history of rail within the region and rides were given on a working replica of Locomotion No.1.
Tickets for the event sold out in less than 72 hours, with 40 attendees gaining access through a competition held in collaboration with Northern Echo.
The event also included an appearance from Inspiration, Railway 200’s exhibition train.

This event is particularly special for us as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of our Newton Aycliffe factory – the moment Hitachi brought train manufacturing back to its birthplace. The lead up to the Open Day also saw Hitachi Rail welcome 200 local pupils to the factory to learn what lies ahead for the factory in the near future.
