Gulf Coast Rail Receives $21 Million in Grants

The Federal Railroad Administration has announced a funding grant of over 21 million USD for Gulf Coast Rail.

The 21,117,115 USD grant is set to be used to support operating costs of the returning Amtrak passenger services on the Gulf Coast.

The re-opening of passenger services along the Gulf Coast will see the first offered in twenty years
U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., stated:

“Gulf Coast Rail is an investment in the future of our state.

“This grant will help with operational costs, ultimately reconnecting communities and ensuring that Mississippians have access to reliable transportation.”

Following the suspension of the line as a result of Hurricane Katrina in 2005; plans to reintroduce passenger services across the Gulf Coast were first brought to Congress in 2017, with the eight year journey set to culminate in the re-opening of the line in February 2025.

The project previously received a grant of 174.8 million USD through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) programme, which is part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
