Paris: The International Union of Railways (UIC), an organisation that exists to improve the coherence of the global rail network and develop strategies and initiatives to increase investment in the industry, has appointed Gianluigi Castelli, Chairman of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), as its own chair. Castelli, who has previously directed IT services for Fiat and Vodaphone, has worked for FS since 2016. During that period he has assisted the outgoing chair of the UIC, Renato Mazzoncini, on several research projects in digitalisation.

Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, Director General of the UIC, said:

“FS group has confirmed its highest involvement in UIC by naming Gianluigi Castelli, Chairman of the group. I am totally confident and will do everything I can, so that the orientations made so far by Renato Mazzoncini will be kept and enhanced by Gianluigi Castelli. His position within FS, his professional experience, and his motivation will certainly be a great asset for our railway community worldwide in the years to come.”

In addition to his position at FS Castelli is CEO of Nugo S.p.A. and Associate Professor of Practice with SDA Bocconi as well as Director of the SDA Bocconi DEVO Lab.
