DB Regio has ordered 19 new battery-powered FLIRT Akku trains from Stadler for use in Central Thuringia, Germany.

The trains will begin service in December 2028 as part of DB Regio’s new transport contract that runs until 2043.

The new FLIRT Akku trains charge their batteries while running on electrified tracks and can then run for up to 80 kilometres without overhead power lines. They can consequently be used on parts of the rail network that do not have overhead catenary wires.

Christine Singer, Chairwoman of the Regional Management of DB Regio Südost said:

Winning the contract is an important milestone for us and, together with our partners in local public transport, we are making an active contribution to the mobility transition. We are delighted to be going into operation with these modern, comfortable and environmentally friendly battery-electric vehicles.

Each train will have 160 seats, including areas for wheelchairs, bicycles, and pushchairs. Passengers will also have access to Wi-Fi, electronic information screens, and video surveillance. The vehicles are designed with barrier-free access and interior layouts that aim to support comfort and accessibility.

This order also marks the first time a coordinated visual identity has been specified for new trains in Thuringia, both inside and out. The design is set to be used on other future vehicles in the region, helping to create a more recognisable appearance for local rail services.

Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler Division Germany said:

DB Regio has ordered 19 FLIRT Akku multiple-unit trains for use in Thuringia and we are delighted that the first battery-powered trains for the green heart of Germany will come from Stadler. We are thus making a joint contribution to environmentally friendly mobility.
