GE Transportation Produces First TE33A Locomotive for Ukrainian Railways
GE Transportation has completed production of the first Evolution series TE33A locomotive (Russian gauge) in a fleet of 30 for Ukrainian Railways. The framework agreement was signed in 2018 and includes the option for producing an additional 10 locomotives by 2028, upgrading current locomotives in the operator’s fleet, and long-term maintenance services.
Yevgen Kravtsov, Acting Chairman of the Management Board of Ukrainian Railways, said:
“This locomotive represents the next step in Ukraine’s long working relationship with GE. Our partnership will not only upgrade our fleet, but modernize Ukraine’s transportation infrastructure and further cement our country’s position as a key transit hub between Europe and Asia and ensure Ukraine’s export potential. It also will spur local economic development and job growth.”
All 30 of the locomotives will be produced in the U.S. but final assembly and other work will be delegated to facilities in Ukraine. The TE33A locomotive has a top speed of 75mph (120km/h) and is compliant with Russian GOST standards.
Ukraine is one of the top 10 producers of wheat and corn in the world and, as 90% of its diesel fleet has exceeded the length of its intended service, the operator has ordered the new locomotives to support increased demand for freight services.

The TE33A locomotive features a 12-cylinder, 4,500-horsepower Evolution series engine which provides a high-power output and low life-cycle costs, improving performance in heavy-haul operations. The TE33A can operate for longer periods between maintenance overhauls than the current fleet operated by Ukrainian Railways and also produces lower emissions.
