During InnoTrans in Berlin, our colleagues had the opportunity to meet with the Jewell Instruments team and discuss the latest developments in their inertial sensor portfolio. One of these developments is the expansion of Jewell’s Ruby MEMS platform with a new generation of digital accelerometers and inclinometers.

The new Digital Ruby series combines improved performance, rugged construction and digital output in a compact sensor design. Its introduction follows the launch of Jewell’s Analog Ruby MEMS sensors in 2025 and further extends the Ruby platform for applications requiring accurate acceleration and inclination measurements.

From Analog Ruby to Digital Ruby

The Ruby platform was introduced as Jewell’s next generation of MEMS accelerometers and inclinometers. Following the introduction of the analog JMHA accelerometers and JMHI inclinometers, the range now includes two digital product families:

The Digital Ruby sensors are designed to replace several existing Jewell digital MEMS series, including the JDI, DMH, DML, DMS and DKA series. The JDHA accelerometer also represents a new addition to Jewell’s digital MEMS portfolio.

Improved Performance in a Rugged Design

The Digital Ruby series offers the same or improved performance compared with the MEMS sensors it replaces, including a faster frequency response and improved resolution.

For use in demanding industrial environments, the sensors feature an IP67 rated enclosure and are available with either a DB9 or M12 connector. A shock rating of 180 g, 0.011 seconds, half sine, further supports use in applications where sensors can be exposed to mechanical shock.

Internal temperature compensation helps maintain measurement performance across changing operating temperatures.

Applications for Digital Ruby MEMS Sensors

The Digital Ruby accelerometers and inclinometers are suited to applications where precise motion, acceleration or tilt measurements are required in demanding environments. Potential applications include:

  • Industrial machinery
  • Structural monitoring
  • Test and measurement systems
  • Transportation,
  • Geotechnical monitoring
  • Platform levelling.

With their rugged IP67 construction, digital output and temperature compensation, the sensors can be integrated into both stationary and mobile measurement systems where reliable inertial data is required.

Designed for Easier Integration and Replacement

For existing Jewell users, mechanical compatibility has also been considered. The Digital Ruby sensors use the same mounting configuration as the JDI series they replace, helping simplify integration into existing applications.

The digital Ruby range is CE tested and certified. Each sensor is supplied with an individual calibration report and comes with a three-year warranty.

With a combination of digital output, rugged construction, improved measurement performance and a competitive price-performance ratio, the Digital Ruby range provides a new option for both existing Jewell applications and new measurement systems.

Digital Accelerometers and Inclinometers for Your Application

Choosing the right accelerometer or inclinometer depends on more than measurement range alone. Accuracy, resolution, frequency response, environmental conditions, mounting and system integration all influence sensor selection.

Althen Sensors & Controls can help you select the appropriate Jewell digital Ruby accelerometer or inclinometer for your measurement application.
