In Ontario, Canada, Metrolinx has announced plans to refurbish 302 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches through agreements with Alstom and Ontario Northland.

The refurbishment work will be carried out at two locations: 181 train cars will be refurbished at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay, while 121 cars will undergo retrofitting at Ontario Northland’s facility in North Bay.

The refurbishment will include several upgrades to enhance passenger comfort and extend the service life of the train cars by 20 years. Key improvements will include:

  • New seating, flooring, and wall materials
  • Installation of new train doors
  • Upgraded washrooms and electrical outlets with USB ports
  • Modernised heating and air conditioning systems

These enhancements are part of broader efforts to maintain a reliable and efficient GO Transit fleet. The refurbished coaches will contribute to the expansion of two-way, all-day GO train service on key routes.

In addition to the coach upgrades, Ontario Northland will refurbish several F59 locomotives acquired from Metrolink, Southern California’s Regional Rail Authority. These locomotives will support GO Transit operations and serve as a source for spare parts in maintaining GO’s existing F59 fleet.
