The Ontario government has confirmed plans to extend the Hazel McCallion light rail line into downtown Brampton and Mississauga, with a four-kilometre underground tunnel set to be built in Brampton.
The tunnelled extension will connect Brampton Gateway Terminal to the city’s downtown core. This will improve connectivity by linking Brampton to other transit systems, including Brampton Transit, Züm, GO Transit, and MiWay.
Electrically powered light rail vehicles (LRVs) will operate on the extension, reducing emissions.

This project is part of Ontario’s broader 70 billion CAD investment in public transit infrastructure.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation said:As one of the fastest-growing cities in our province, Brampton residents deserve access to world-class transit to meet the needs of a vibrant, thriving community. Last year, we made a promise to pave the way for a new priority transit extension that will shorten the daily commutes of tens of thousands of people in Brampton, and we’re getting it done.
The Brampton extension will support the creation of 47,000 new housing units and 17,000 jobs, contributing to economic growth and urban renewal in downtown Brampton. The project is seen as essential to meeting the demands of a growing population in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), which is expected to expand by five million people by 2051.
Detailed planning and design work is underway, with Metrolinx studying the optimal route and construction methods. The extension is a priority project under Ontario’s 2024 Building Transit Faster Act, which aims to streamline the approval process and speed up construction.
The extension is being advanced separately from the main Hazel McCallion Line corridor, which is already under construction. This mainline will span 18 kilometres from Port Credit GO to Brampton Gateway Terminal, better connecting Mississauga and Brampton.
Meanwhile, an additional extension has also been confirmed for downtown Mississauga, for which planning and design work is underway.
