CAF to Supply New Tram Fleet for Rome

Public transport operator, ATAC S.p.A., has awarded CAF a framework contract for the supply of a new tram fleet in Rome.

The contract, which is worth over 130 million EUR, will see CAF design and manufacture 40 trams for the capital city, as well as provide fleet spares and maintenance for up to 5 years after fulfilment. It also includes the option to expand the number of units by 81, bringing the total number of vehicles to 121.

With the new trams, ATAC S.p.A. intends to replace the current, outdated fleet operating on the city’s six existing lines, as well as provide infrastructure for new lines in the future, which would be paid for using European funding.

The CAF-designed Urbos trams will consist of 5 modules, and allow for simple upgrades with the OESS (On Board Energy Storage Systems) system, allowing for the units to operate on catenary-free sections of track throughout Rome.

The CAF Group has worked in partnership with Roma Capitale for over 20 years, supplying 71 metro units for the city.
