CAF has signed three contracts with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), the state-owned body responsible for the Cairo Metro network. The agreements, with a combined value of more than 450 million EUR, cover the modernisation of rolling stock and the maintenance of units operating on Lines 1 and 2.

The projects will be financed through the Business Internationalisation Fund (FIEM), managed by Spain’s Secretary of State for Trade. FIEM supports Spanish companies undertaking projects abroad by providing public funding for key international initiatives.

Under the agreements, CAF will carry out the following work:

Line 2 modernisation: CAF will upgrade 39 units to extend their service life by an estimated 20 years. The work includes replacement of traction and train control systems, installation of new auxiliary converters, braking system upgrades, new passenger information systems, CCTV, Wi-Fi capability, and refurbishment of both interiors and exteriors. The Shubra workshop will also be upgraded to enable ongoing maintenance and large-scale refurbishment.

Line 2 maintenance: CAF will provide comprehensive maintenance services for the 39 upgraded units over a 10-year period. This will cover system resets and work on mechanical components, carried out in parallel with the modernisation programme.

Line 1 maintenance: CAF will undertake maintenance of 23 units on Line 1 once its current modernisation programme, awarded in 2021, is completed. This contract also spans 10 years.

CAF is already active in Egypt, where it is modernising Line 1 metro units and refurbishing the Kozzika maintenance depot. The new contracts add to its ongoing role in supporting Cairo’s urban transport system.
