CAF has announced the completion of a range test of its Civity battery-electric unit (BEMU) platform at the Siemens Test and Validation Center in Wildenrath, Germany.
The vehicle in question was a short-type Class 557 unit, which was equipped with standard production LTO (Lithium Titanate Oxide) traction batteries.
During the test run, the vehicle completed a journey of 273km operating solely on battery power, and the performance of the unit’s traction system was evaluated under extreme operating conditions.
All data and insights obtained from the test are set to be incorporated into the further development of battery-electric propulsion technologies.
The test focused on the interaction between the vehicle’s control system, energy management, and battery behaviour as well as general range potential, with all recorded data now planned to be compared with results previously generated by simulation models used during the development process
CAF has also announced that it will exhibit a battery-electric Class 557 multiple unit at this year’s InnoTrans show in Berlin – marking the unit’s official debut to the public.
