Amtrak has presented details of its NextGen Acela high-speed trainsets, manufactured by Alstom. These units are set to enter service on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) in spring 2025
The new trainsets aim to modernise rail travel, offering enhanced comfort, improved sustainability, and state-of-the-art technology.
The NextGen Acela trainsets have been designed with a focus on passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility. Key features include:
- Seating Enhancements: Comfortable seats equipped with personal outlets, USB ports, and winged headrests for added privacy
- Modern Restrooms: Spacious facilities with contactless features and automatic door access
- Real-Time Information: Onboard systems providing live updates on train location, speed, and conductor announcements
- Improved Luggage Storage: Contactless storage options for convenience
- Upgraded Café Cars: Self-service options for food and beverage purchases
- Accessibility: Features designed to accommodate all passengers
The NextGen Acela trainsets also incorporate safety systems for real-time monitoring, alongside improved passenger stability thanks to integrated seatback handles and grab bars.
Sustainability has been prioritised in their design, with components that reduce energy consumption by at least 20% compared to previous models. Materials include recycled leather for seating, while Amtrak has also expanded its recycling and sustainable food programmes.
Meanwhile, Amtrak’s commitment to domestic manufacturing has resulted in 95% of the train components sourced from the US. The production has involved over 70 suppliers in 23 states, creating more than 1,300 new jobs. The project has also generated 280 million USD in materials and services contracts, benefiting small and disadvantaged businesses.
Since its introduction in December 2000, Acela has been a cornerstone of Amtrak’s operations, serving nearly 67.3 million passengers to date. The NextGen Acela now marks a new chapter for Amtrak, reflecting its ongoing commitment to enhancing the passenger experience while supporting sustainability and domestic manufacturing.
The trainsets, funded through a Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing (RRIF) loan backed by NEC revenues, underscore the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Railroad Administration, and Alstom.
