Alstom to Open Derby Factory to the Public for the First Time

As part of the Railway 200 celebration, Alstom has announced plans to open its Derby Litchurch Lane rolling stock factory to the public for the first time in 2025.

The event, titled “The Greatest Gathering,” will take place from 1 to 3 August as part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking two centuries of Britain’s railway history.

The event promises a unique opportunity for the public to explore one of the world’s largest rolling stock factories, which has been in operation since its opening by the Midland Railway in 1876.

Derby itself has a rich heritage in train manufacturing, with continuous production dating back to 1839.

The event will showcase a broad array of railway exhibits, celebrating the past, present, and future of Britain’s railways.

Highlights include:

  • Rolling Stock Displays: A temporary assembly of iconic locomotives and rail vehicles from across the ages, featuring both historic and modern designs.
  • Interactive Experiences: Visitors can enjoy rides along Derby’s test track and engage with miniature train displays and layouts presented by leading names in model railways.
  • Festival Atmosphere: The event will include fairground attractions, refreshment areas, and live music performances to create a family-friendly, festive environment.

The Derby Litchurch Lane Works is the UK’s sole facility that designs, engineers, builds, and tests trains for domestic and export markets. The site is internationally recognised for its contribution to rail innovation and is central to Alstom’s operations.

The event is open to the public, but booking or tickets are required. Further information on ticketing and event schedules will be shared closer to the date.
