Alstom has signed a contract with ViaMobilidade, the operator of São Paulo’s 8-Diamond and 9-Emerald lines, and the Government of São Paulo for the modernisation of signalling systems on both lines.

The contract, which is valued at 1 billion R, includes the implementation of the first European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 within Latin America.

Suely Sola, Managing Director of Alstom Brazil, and Head of Signalling and Infrastructure for Latin America, said:

This is a significant milestone for both Alstom and the urban mobility landscape in São Paulo. This is advanced technology, already proven and effective in several European cities. The ETCS Level 2 system will enable more efficient, safer, and more comfortable travel for passengers on Lines 8-Diamond and 9-Emerald. The project reaffirms our ongoing commitment to innovation and the improvement of transport infrastructure in the region.

Modernisation work will begin in June 2026 and is set to be carried out within six-years, as per the contract, with the projects immediately set to commence following the service order itself.

Francisco Pierrini, Operations Director at Motiva Trilhos, said:

The R$1 billion investment is a clear demonstration of our commitment to transforming urban mobility in São Paulo. We are working closely with the State Government to implement innovative solutions, always with responsibility, transparency, and a direct positive impact on passengers’ lives.

Alstom first introduced ETCS technology to Latin America in 2021 as part of a project in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, where the company implemented the technology in its Level 1 form. Alstom also supplied 36 trains for operation on the two lines.
