Alstom to Equip 77 Regional Trains with ERTMS

AB Transitio, Region Skåne through Skånetrafiken, Region Blekinge, Hallandstrafiken AB, and DSB SOV have chosen Alstom to equip 77 X31 regional trains with ERTMS.

The agreement further includes an option to equip an additional 34 trains. All of them are to be ready by the end of 2023. The contract is worth in the region of 35 million euros (38 million USD).

The electric multiple units in question operate in the Øresund region in Sweden and Denmark.

To fulfil the contract, Alstom will fit the trains with a solution that has an integrated dual system, meaning that the trains can run on legacy lines featuring the ATC-2 system in Sweden while also being able to operate on lines already equipped with ERTMS Level 2 in both Sweden and Denmark. The X31 trains will also be equipped so that they can run on the existing ZUB 123 system in Denmark. The dual system Alstom will install will minimise the amount of hardware needed as it shares some on-board components and the wheel sensors.

Björn Asplund, Managing Director, Alstom Sweden, said:

“We are very pleased to deliver an onboard control system solution for AB Transitio and their fellow vehicle owners for Öresundstrafiken. This contract is a strategic win for Alstom in Sweden, where its longstanding international ERTMS experience now will be applied to a major part of the train fleet in southern Sweden.”

Alstom is currently equipping 400 trains in Norway with an ERTMS solution as well.

Stefan Kallin, CEO, AB Transitio, said:

“To us, an updated and modern train fleet is important as we see a steadily increasing flow of passengers to a region that continues to grow. With a new digital signalling system, the trains will continue to provide a very safe railway service in the Öresund region.”

Alstom Sweden will deliver the project in collaboration with Alstom’s centre of excellence for ERTMS, which is in Charleroi, Belgium. The installation design and supply chain will be conducted by Alstom’s team in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Alstom’s Atlas solution can be found in 70 percent of on-board ERTMS Level 2 systems currently in service. It has also delivered the first ERTMS Level 3 system in commercial service in the world, which is in Germany.
