Alstom to Supply Futuristic Catenary-Free Power Supply System for Istanbul
Alstom will supply a full APS ground-level power-supply solution for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The solution will be installed on the new ten-kilometre-long Halic “Golden Horn” line, thereby rendering it entirely catenary-free.
Alstom will design and supply the continuous traction power transmission system for the entire fleet of 30 trams, spare parts and equipment, with a warranty of two years. The scope of the agreement also includes testing and commissioning of the APS system and training of the maintenance personnel and administrative staff.

Catenary-Free Power Supply
With APS, power is supplied to the tram through a segmented street-level power rail. The conductive segments are activated only when fully covered by the tram, ensuring total safety for pedestrians and other road users. The power is picked up by contact shoes located under the vehicle, on the tram’s central bogie. APS helps preserve the beauty of the urban environment while guaranteeing the same performance as overhead contact lines. In 2014, Alstom delivered and commissioned the world’s first 100% catenary-free tramway system in Dubai.
Didier Pfleger, Senior Vice-President of Alstom Middle East and Africa, said:
We are extremely proud to provide our state-of-the-art catenary-free power supply system for the city of Istanbul, helping contribute to the preservation of its beauty. Alstom has long been a part of the urban transport development of this great city.
