Alstom Awarded Operations and Maintenance Contract for Maryland Transit

Alstom has been awarded a contract to provide operations and maintenance services for the Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC) Camden and Brunswick Lines.

This 367 million EUR (400 million USD) contract was awarded to Alstom by the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) for an initial period of five years.

The deal also allows for two potential extensions in 2028 and 2033, which would increase the total value of the contract to around 1.2 billion EUR (1.4 billion USD).

Under the broadened scope of this new contract, Alstom will continue operations and maintenance of the Camden and Brunswick Lines

This agreement follows Alstom’s 2012 award of the previous services contract for the MARC Camden and Brunswick Lines, which are 39 miles and 74 miles long respectively.

Under the latest contract, Alstom will continue to be responsible for train operations, customer service, crewing, rolling stock maintenance and management of the stations and facilities.

In additon, it will conduct a fuel-savings pilot and will introduce digital innovations to the MARC network to help deliver sustainable and smart mobility solutions.

This will include the use of digital twins to optimise efficiencies, as well as 3D printing technology to improve maintenance and parts replacements.

Alstom will also deploy a remote assistance platform that uses connected glasses to provide real-time analysis and problem-solving.

Michael Keroullé, Alstom Americas President, said:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to strengthen our long and proud relationship with the Maryland Transit Administration, and very proud of our performance since we initiated services in 2013. We look forward to serving MARC with the continued high-performance standards we have demonstrated in the past decade.”

MARC’s fleet consists of 42 diesel locomotives, 60 MARC II passenger cars and 54 Alstom BiLevel coaches. Alstom will carry out daily inspection, equipment servicing and preventive and corrective maintenance for these vehicles.
