The California High-Speed Rail Authority has released the shortlist of bidders to supply its new electric trains. This includes two teams: Alstom Transportation and Siemens Mobility.
Following the Request for Qualifications released in 2023, this shortlist is a key step towards the release of the Request for Proposals and the procurement of the new electrified high-speed trainsets, which will operate at speeds of up to 220 mph.

This progress comes on the heels of nearly 3.1 billion USD in federal funding for the high-speed project, including funding for the new electric trains.
Authority CEO Brian Kelly said:These world-class vendors ensure that we are procuring the latest generation of high-speed trains. With this recent federal grant, we are able to move forward with this major step on the project, purchasing trains capable of speeds of more than 220 mph to move passengers here in California in a way that transforms the passenger rail experience.
The Trainset and Related Services contract will include:
- The design, manufacture, storage, integration, testing and commissioning of the trainsets
- Maintenance of each trainset for a period of 30 years and provision of all spare parts
- The provision, testing, commissioning, maintenance and update of the driving simulator
- Development of design criteria to inform interfaces with the facilities, track, systems and stations
- Participation in the testing and commissioning of the facilities, track, systems and stations
- The operation and maintenance of trainset maintenance equipment installed in the Heavy Maintenance Facility, Light Maintenance Facility and Trainset Certification Facility
