Record-Breaking Track Monitoring Programme Contributes to Faster Amsterdam – Berlin Travel
Travel time between Amsterdam and Berlin is set be cut by 30 minutes from December. This will require heavier locomotives that can run on both the Dutch (1500 V) and German (15000 V) power supply.
Concerns relating to possible movement of the clay-rich soils on certain stretches have led to a decision to install a Senceive wireless monitoring system to measure movement and ensure passenger safety.
A record-breaking 3,622 tilt meters have been installed near Twente – the largest number of track sensors installed at once in Europe.
Prorail engineers will have access to minute-by-minute updates and will get automated alerts in the event of track movements that are outside pre-defined thresholds.
Further insight into changing ground conditions will come from inclinometers and extensometers installed in boreholes.
