The ISO 5660 is a small-scale calorimetry test providing a large amount of data, covering multiple reaction to fire parameters, as such it’s a popular choice for research.
Its use is also mandated for materials which will be used on European trains, where it measures the heat release rate from a material.
The specimen is placed under the electric heat element and a spark arm is also used to try and ignite the specimen, throughout the test the products of combustion are extracted through the exhaust duct. Within this duct there are sophisticated measuring systems fitted, data from a light system, gas analysers, pressure transducers and thermocouples are used to determine the heat release rate and smoke production from the material.
